Abnormal Psychology: Course Description

This course is designed to provide students with an introduction to theories and research concerning abnormal behavior (psychopathology). The course will address such topics as the incidence (frequency) of abnormal behavior of various types; how abnormal behaviors are classified into various diagnostic categories; the etiologies (causes) of psychological disorders; and the variety of methods employed in the treatment of abnormal behavior.
 

History and Overview of Abnormal Psychology

  • Examine the evolution of abnormal psychology as a discipline.
  • Explain the challenges in defining and classifying normal and abnormal behavior.
  • Analyze the psychological, biological/medical, and sociocultural theoretical models related to the development of psychopathology.

Anxiety, Mood/Affective, and Dissociative/Somatoform Disorders

  • Examine the various classifications of anxiety, mood/affective, and dissociative/somatoform disorders.
  • Analyze the biological, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral components of anxiety, mood/affective, and dissociative/somatoform disorders.

Eating, Substance Abuse, Sex/Gender/Sexual, and Personality Disorders

  • Examine the various classifications of eating, substance abuse, sex/gender/sexual, and personality disorders.
  • Analyze the biological, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral components of eating, substance abuse, sex/gender/sexual, and personality disorders.

Schizophrenia and Psychosis, Lifespan Development, and Psychological Stress and Physical Disorders

  • Examine the various classifications of schizophrenia and psychosis, and lifespan development.
  • Analyze the biological, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral components of schizophrenia and psychosis, and lifespan development.

Professional Issues in Abnormal Psychology

  • Identify professionals in the field of abnormal psychology.
  • Analyze legal and ethical issues related to licensed professionals in the field of abnormal psychology.
  • Explain how the concepts of abnormal psychology can be applied outside therapeutic environments.
